  • Here's Nadia, our Women's Officer and frontline support worker for victims/survivors of domestic abuse on day 2 of our 16 days of activism to eliminate gender based violence:

End femi(ni)cide.

UNODC definition: In the "Recommendations for action against gender-related killing of women and girs" booklet fem(in)icide is referred to as the "gender-related killing of women" and it argues that it "occurs in all our societies, be it as a result of intimate partner violence, in the name of “honour”, in connection with accusations of sorcery or witchcraft, or in the context of armed conflict. In many cases, the killing is the final step in a continuum of violence against women and girls. Too often, perpetrators are not held accountable and impunity prevails".

Key findings from the UNODC global report 2019:

1. 137 women across the world are killed by a member of their own family every day. This amounts to some six women being killed every hour by people they know.

2. More than a third (30,000) of the women intentionally killed in 2017 were killed by their current or former intimate partner.

3. The annual number of female deaths worldwide resulting from intimate partner/family-related homicide seems be on the increase.

4. Africa is the region where women run the greatest risk of being killed by their intimate partner or family members, while Europe (0.7 per 100,000 population) is the region where the risk is lowest. The intimate partner/family-related homicide rate was also high in the Americas in 2017, at 1.6 per 100,000 female population, as well as Oceania, at 1.3, and Asia, at 0.9.

5. Shares of female vs. male victimes: The disparity between the shares of male and female victims of homicide perpetrated exclusively by an intimate partner is substantially larger than of victims of homicide perpetrated by intimate partners or family members: roughly 82 per cent female victims versus 18 percent male victims.

  • *** Today marks International Day For the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, kicking off the 16 Days of Activism to stop this violence***

It is an international campaign to highlight – and ultimately stop – the mistreatment of women and girls.

As the world was forced to retreat inside homes due to the lockdown measures introduced to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, reports found an alarming increase in the already existing pandemic of violence against women. Indeed those of us working in frontline services saw a huge spike in reporting of this or in requiring support.

UN Secretary-General's report tells us: "Accompanying the crisis has been a spike in domestic violence reporting, at exactly the time that services, including rule of law, health and shelters, are being diverted to address the pandemic,”

Please do take part in events during this time to increase your knowledge and awareness around this and take action.

  • EVENT ON 2 DECEMBER! Unemployment has rocketed locally. In Waltham Forest nearly 18,000 people are claiming benefits and nearly 50,000 are on furloughed employment. Those at work have been fighting to minimise the risks of infection. We have Shelly Asquith from the TUC, Faiza Shaheen from the trade union-based think-tank CLASS, and Katie Lindenberg from the NEU, to set out the policies the trade unions will be setting out to address these issues. Get in touch if you want to come along!
